Unicode and long messages

A plain text holds 160 characters in one segment. Emoji and letters outside GSM-7 make it Unicode: 70 characters per segment. This 122-character French text contains ô, so it goes as Unicode in 2 segments. To France it costs:

How message length sets the price

The country price is per segment. The console and the API count segments for each recipient after merge fields are filled, so a long first name can move one person to the next segment while the rest stay at one. Extended characters such as { } [ ] ~ \ | ^ and the euro sign count as two in GSM-7.

Messages stop at 10 segments (2,000 characters as written). The opt-out line you set in Settings counts toward the length when you add it.
